Three Reasons NOT to Refinance Your Home Right Now

Posted on April 27th, 2009 by brian in Refinancing

Refinancing can be a great move in many instances. But there are a some circumstances in which it may not ultimately be in your favor to refinance a home loan. Do your research to decide whether it is the right financial decision for you. In some cases, the following can be signs that a refinance may not make sense for you right now:

1) Your Property Value Has Decreased. In some cases a new loan may not be sufficient to cover the original mortgage, if the value of your home has decreased.

2) You Have Little Remaining Equity. If you have borrowed against most of the value of your home, it will be difficult to obtain refinancing at favorable rates. Lenders in tough economic times are especially wary of loans verging on 100% of the property value.

3) You are Near the End of Current Mortgage. If you only have a few years remaining on your current mortgage, it is rarely worth the long-term pain of refinancing, as you will end up paying for many more years than you would have, with greater interest paid out in the long run.
